Judge Parker's Frontier:

A Deep Dive into the Fort Smith National Historic Site Events

🔥 Trending
The Fort Smith National Historic Site is the beating heart of the Fall Festival. It’s a place where the stories of the frontier come to life.

As you step onto the grounds, you’re walking in the footsteps of soldiers, marshals, and outlaws. This site served as both a military fort and one of the most famous federal courts in American history.

It's here that the festival's main reenactments take place, bringing the tumultuous past of the "Wild West" to the present day.

A History of Law and Order

The site's rich history is the perfect backdrop for the festival. The first military fort was established here in 1817 to maintain peace between tribes.

Later, in 1875, the famous federal court opened under the authority of Judge Isaac C. Parker, who would earn the nickname "The Hanging Judge." His court had a vast jurisdiction that spanned Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), and his deputies faced incredible dangers to bring notorious outlaws to justice.

It’s this legacy of law and order that you'll see explored throughout the day.

Key Reenactments and Demonstrations

The festival’s schedule is a curated journey through time. Each event offers a window into the lives of those who lived and worked on the frontier.

  • The Belle Starr Trial Reenactment: One of the day's highlights! This reenactment tells the story of Myra Maybelle Shirley Reed Starr, the infamous "Bandit Queen." The event gives you a front-row seat to the drama of her trial in Judge Parker's court.

  • "Running at the Heads" Cavalry Demonstration: This demonstration showcases the precision and skill of military riders. It's a fast-paced and exciting drill that was used to train soldiers for combat.

  • School of the Soldier: Perfect for kids! This interactive program allows children to participate in a military drill. They get to handle a wooden musket and learn about the discipline and commands of a frontier soldier.

Living History All Day

Beyond the scheduled events, the Historic Site is alive with continuous demonstrations. You can explore the encampments of Civil War soldiers, deputy marshals, and fur trappers.

Watch a laundress demonstration to see what daily life was like for the women who supported the fort. The variety of activities ensures that every corner of the site offers a new historical perspective.
