While the National Historic Site tells the broad story of law on the frontier, the Fort Smith Museum of History offers a more personal look at the people behind the legends.
Housed in the historic 1906 Atkinson-Williams Warehouse, the museum is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the city, from its military origins to its days as the most famous federal court in the West.
During the Fall Festival, the museum has a unique lineup of events that directly connect to the tales of lawmen and outlaws.
A Trial by Jury
One of the most exciting events is the US v. Belle and Sam Starr Reenactment. While the National Historic Site focuses on the broader story of Belle Starr, the museum’s reenactment lets you experience the trial firsthand.
Attendees will have the chance to "sit on the jury" as the famous "Bandit Queen" is put on trial for horse theft. It's an immersive and entertaining way to witness a piece of history and understand how Judge Parker’s court operated.
Voices from Early Fort Smith
The museum's "History Alive!" program brings key historical figures to life. Re-enactors will portray iconic individuals who shaped the city's story.
You can expect to meet familiar faces like Judge Parker and Belle Starr as well as infamous figures like Bonnie & Clyde, who passed through Fort Smith during their crime spree.
These performances give a personal voice to the legends of the past.
The Reel Thrilling Outlaw
The festival is also a chance to learn about a lesser-known but equally fascinating figure: outlaw Henry Starr.
A cousin of Belle Starr, he was known for being a clever bank robber who later wrote a book about his life of crime.
The museum will host a special program and book signing, offering a rare opportunity to explore the story of an outlaw who navigated both sides of the law. |
